Nestled in the vibrant heart of the Bronx at 5589 Broadway, El Económico Restaurant stands as a beloved Dominican culinary gem renowned for its authentic flavors and generous portions. For over a decade, this neighborhood staple has been delighting patrons with a menu that speaks volumes about Dominican heritage and home-style cooking, all at incredibly affordable prices.
Step inside, and you’re greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere where counter seating offers an intimate glimpse into the bustling kitchen, complemented by additional seating in cozy back and upstairs areas. The ambiance feels like a comforting embrace — casual, lively, and perfectly suited for everything from a quick lunch to a relaxed dinner catching up with friends or family.
The menu at El Económico is a celebration of rich, satisfying Dominican fare. Classics like Sancocho — a hearty, slow-cooked stew brimming with tender meats and vibrant root vegetables — deliver deep, soulful flavors that immediately transport you to the Caribbean. The Beef Stew and Carne Guisada are equally compelling, boasting meaty tenderness bathed in savory, well-seasoned sauces that coat your palate with comforting warmth.
For those craving something with an irresistible crunch, the Chicharrón de Pollo con Tostones offers perfectly fried, juicy chicken paired with crispy, golden tostones that provide a delightful textural contrast. Meanwhile, the Pollo Guisado con Tostones beautifully balances tender stewed chicken with the richness of fried plantains, a pairing that sings with every bite.
The diversity on offer is impressive — from the Cuban Sandwich filled with savory meats to the Chofan Estilo Dominicano, a Dominican-style fried rice dish that combines fresh vegetables and savory proteins in a delightful fusion of textures and tastes. And for a true taste of tradition, dishes like Mangú Pernil y Salami and Bistec Encebollado con Arroz Blanco showcase the distinctive roots of Dominican cuisine through humble yet incredibly satisfying ingredients.
Beverage options stand out too — enjoy an ice-cold Heineken or Corona served with a refreshing lime wedge, or indulge in freshly squeezed orange juice and a strong, espresso-like coffee that rivals even the most popular specialty chains, but at a fraction of the cost.
What sets El Económico apart isn’t just the food, but the sincere, warm hospitality. Customers often remark on the friendliness and humor of the staff, delivering a dining experience that feels personal and genuine. The portions are thoughtfully generous, allowing many guests to stretch a single meal into two satisfying servings, making it a go-to spot for value without sacrificing quality.
Whether you’re a Bronx local or making a special trip, El Económico Restaurant promises a flavorful journey into Dominican culinary traditions. It’s honest, hearty food made with care — a place where every bite tells a story and every visit feels like coming home.
A staple in the neighborhood for 10+ years. The food doesn't disappoint, offering authentic Latin fare for great prices. Always great for a quick meal.
Whenever I'm in the Bronx, I have to come here! Food was delicious as always and super affordable. I got three beef stew lunches for $7 each. The portions are good enough for me to make two meals out of one. Too bad I can't come here more often since it's an hour away from my home :(
Wonderful inexpensive real Dominican food and ambiance. Love the food, the counter top seating (although there are tables in the back and upstairs), the drinks (fresh orange juice, coffee more like an extra large expresso... for less than 2.00$..take that Starbucks...ice cold Caronas with the slice of lime). There's all kinds of delicious food; I love chicken and rice and beans. Also the stew. Feeds me for 2 days... maybe 3 for 7.00$ Where can you beat that in NYC? It's always super busy but the noise just comes with the territory; gives the place more flavor. I've been eating here since 1998. Not much has changed and that's one of the things I love about El Economico. I can always count on excellent food at affordable prices. I don't speak Spanish and not once has anyone gotten my order wrong over that 20 year span nor have I ever waited more than 5 - 10 minutes to be served. They even deliver. What's not to like? It's easy to get here situated on the Broadway just shy of 231st St. I highly recommend El Economico.
Food was really good. The women there are very nice and funny.
This was a great place! As the name suggests, you can eat a lot for a great price. Everything was so savory and authentic. I found the seasoning salty, but I normally eat low on salt, so just be aware that this is how Dominican food usually is. They have a wide menu selection and everything seems to be cooked right and fresh. Highly recommend this place!
